Intravenous Therapy - Principles and Practice

Aim:

The aim of this course is to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the safe practice of intravenous and injection therapy.

Background:

First level nurses are responsible for ensuring quality and safety in delivering intravenous therapy where it is a designated element of patient care. This course provides practice opportunities through simulation, to acquire skills and knowledge of the trusts governance requirements in relation to intravenous therapy, medication error, incident reporting and Royal College of Nursing (RCN) standards for infusion therapy, Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) Policy and Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) guidance and as such is at the cutting edge of practice development.

 

Learning Outcomes: Assessment:

1. Apply anatomy and physiology knowledge to the recognition, assessment, and nursing management of physiological disturbance associated with anaphylaxis. 2. Demonstrate knowledge of numeracy and drug calculations. 3. Apply knowledge to the safe infusion using medical devices and compliance with local and national guidelines. 4. Discuss the legal, ethical, and accountability implications associated with intravenous therapy and understand the importance of achieving competence.

1. Theory Exam– Summative (80% pass) Intravenous Therapy Competency (6 Infusions, and 6 Bolus injections in total – to be completed in 3 months) 2. Calculations Exam – Summative (100% pass) Intravenous Therapy Competency (6 Infusions, and 6 Bolus injections in total – to be completed in 3 months) 3. Theory Exam – Summative (80% pass) Intravenous Therapy Competency (6 Infusions, and 6 Bolus injections in total – to be completed in 3 months) core competency - Summative OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) volumetric pump 4. Theory Exam – Summative (80% pass) Calculations Exam – Summative (100% pass) Intravenous Therapy Competency (6 Infusions, and 6 Bolus injections in total – to be completed in 3 months) Further summative volumetric pump core competency based assessment by a recognised pump trainer.

Pre-requisites:

Competencies to be completed prior to attending:- - Medicines Administration Competency - Aseptic Non Touch Technique Competency Staff commencing the course should be completing a learning contract prior to starting, that nominates an assessor and assessment time in practice.
