| Aim: | The aim of this course is to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the safe administration of medicines. |
| Background: | Practitioners are responsible for ensuring quality and safety in maintaining key knowledge and skills in the administration of medicines. This study day fulfils education standards and expectations of the Trusts key priorities through the Trust Medicine Code, Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Standard for Medicines Management and National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) alerts. As such it is at the cutting edge of practice development. The day serves as an aide-mémoire and refresher in which practitioners examine medication errors both nationally and locally. The reporting and development of action plans in order to accompany core competencies in medicine management is also included in the day. |

1. Demonstrate knowledge and adherence to legal & professional accountability and responsibility in the administration of medicines in accordance with the Trust Policies, Professional Guidelines and National legislations. 2. Analyse medication incidents and explore risk management strategies for their reduction in practice. 3. Critically evaluate standards of knowledge required in practice in order to achieve the medicines management competency assessment. |
1. Summative - Drug Calculation Test (100% pass) Formative - Group discussion and examination of trust and professional guidelines. 2. Formative - Discussion and analysis of current trends, statistics and practice in clinical areas. Evaluation and suggestions to improve practice. 3. Summative - Medicines Management Competency Assessment. |

| Pre-requisites: | This course is suitable for any nurse who feels that they need a medicines refresher. It is particularly useful for nurses who have been absent from work for a period of time either due to sickness, maternity leave or a career break. Managers can access this course for any nurse as part of their professional development needs. |
